If you have not yet done so, we have to say farewell to our comforting innocence and agree with William Flaiz that people don’t go to websites, web sites come to them.
To understand why, we need to understand why and how certain assumptions and believes come into being and are often perpetuated beyond their times when they are no longer relevant. Take for example the expression, “if the mountain will not come to Mohamed, Mohamed will go to the mountain.”
According to legend the founder father of Islam was confronted by a crowd to provide proof of his teachings and to demonstrate his powers he ordered Mount Safa to come to him. When the mountain did not comply with his wish, he thanked God the merciful for not granting his misguided wish as it would have fallen on and destroyed the whole village and the crowd. He thus pledged to go to the mountain thank God.
Contrary to the realism demonstrated by the prophet in this situation, modern business people as well as the proponents of classical marketing theory often cling to the conventional wisdom that all you need to ensure the success is to find the right geographic location where traffic flows abundantly and customers will swarm into your business.
But, does this assumption still hold true in our troubled times? Not so if one listens to William Flaiz of Search Engine Watch who shocked the business world by bluntly stating in the 1st August 2008 edition that :
“People don’t go to web sites anymore – Web sites come to them.”
The big question is what lessons should one draw from William Flaiz’s provocative statement for your on and offline wellness or any other business? Thanks fore your comments and contributions.
